Kellogg Concepts has provided design consultation for addition and remodel to a two story home in Hayward, Ca.  The existing house is a historically significant large two story house built in 1926. The project included exploration of several options to expand private office spaces and remodel the primary bathroom.  The existing front and rear elevations:

Two design options were developed to integrate second story additions with the Cal-villa style of the existing house including complex hip roof structure, intricately detailed overhanging eaves, simple stucco façade with casement windows.   The designs utilized 3D Sketch-Up models to provide accurate representations of the options for both exterior and interior viewpoints.

Option 1 included a second story addition over the existing Kitchen wing, which included two private offices, large walk-in wardrobe storage, and remodel of the primary second floor bathroom.  The hip-roof was designed to integrate with the existing roof and provide a mass and ridge line that is balanced with and supportive of the primary house.

Option 2 provided enclosure of the existing second floor deck generating space for two shared offices, and remodel of the second floor primary bathroom.  The intent was to provide an open office space flooded with light with the use of roof skylights.  The roof structure reflects the existing hip-roof of the main house integrated with the extension of the projected bay of the existing deck, and addition of a “Dutch Gable” clerestory and extended skylights at the new ridge line.  This creates a dynamic interior space flooded with light and view.

Design options for the bathroom remodel include creating shared spaces for lavatory and vanity cabinet, freestanding tub, walk-in shower, and toilet area.   The design includes addition of a sun tunnel and framed glass block to accentuate outside light into the space.
